SODA ASH

SODA ASH (Sodium Carbonate) (CODE 2016)

* SODA ASH OR SODIUM CARBONATE IS USED EXTENSIVELY FOR FIXING PROCION DYES AND REACTIVE CD DYES.

* SODA ASH IS A MILD ALKALI AND PROCION DYES AND REACTIVE CD DYES CAN ONLY FIX UNDER MILDLY ALKALINE CONDITIONS WHEN DYEING OR PRINTING.

* WASHING SODA IS SOMETIMES USED AS AN ALTERNATIVE WHEN FIXED PROCION OR REACTIVE CD DYES, BUT WASHING SODA CONTAINS CAUSTIC SODA AS AN IMPURITY AND THIS CAN CAUSE DULLING AND WEAKENING OF SHADES WHETHER DYED OR PRINTED.

* WHEN PRINTING SILK, SODIUM BICARBONATE (A WEAKER ALKALI THAN SODA ASH) IS OFTEN RECOMMENDED AND SOME RECIPES CONTAIN A MIXURE OF SODA ASH AND SODIUM BICARBONATE FOR SILK.
